“Painting Hands”, an exhibit of new work by Anchorage-based (but globetrotting) abstract painter and sculptor Katherine Coons, opens at the AKHF offices in a First Friday event on August 3.
Earlier this summer, the artist treated Door 15 editor David Holthouse with a tour of her studio, located in a rustic outbuilding behind the lovingly renovated home she shares with her husband in South Anchorage on the shore of Turnagain Arm.
Below are links to two short excerpts of a video of that studio tour. They offer a preview of some of the works in “Painting Hands” as well as a glimpse into Katherine’s creative process, demonstrating the complex internal debates and deliberations that visual artists must confront and work through before declaring a piece “finished.”
“Painting Hands” will be on display at the AKHF offices downtown through August 31 during regular business hours. Katherine will be in the house for the Aug. 3 opening, and will discuss her work publicly for about 30 minutes starting at 6:30. All are invited.
