The Tlingit alphabet is almost twice as big as the English alphabet, and four of its 50 characters stand for sounds not found in any other language. As with other Alaska Native languages, the number of birth speakers of Tlingit is decreasing, threatening its survival.
To help young Alaskans enjoy learning the Tlingit alphabet, the Sealaska Heritage Institute sponsored the interactive learning tool “Let’s Learn Tlingit!” a set of whimsical flash cards with accompanying audio CD and web page. The project was funded by a grant from the Alaska Humanities Forum.
